Electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. They are usually classified into two main types – AC motors and DC motors. Let’s take a closer look at each type and how they can be applied in various industries.

What is an AC motor?

AC motors are motors powered by alternating current. This kind of motor has two basic parts called the stator and the rotor. The stator is the outer stationary portion with coils supplied with alternating current. The rotor is the inside part that is attached to the motor shaft.

The two main types of AC motors are the induction and synchronous motor. In the induction, also called asynchronous motor, there is a difference in speed between the stator’s rotating magnetic field and the rotor shaft speed – what is usually referred to as slip. The slip induces rotor current in the rotor AC winding. Induction motors can be used for automobiles, kitchen appliances, boiler pumps and many other applications.

On the other hand, synchronous motors do not rely on slip-induction for operation. This motor is used in electromechanical robots, meter pumps, speed controllers, high-precision drill machines and other devices where accuracy is important.

What is a DC motor?

A DC motor converts direct electric current into mechanical energy. They were the first form motor widely used. The most common types of DC motors rely on forces produced by magnetic fields.

Much like AC motors, DC motors have two parts – the stator, which is also its stationary part, and the armature, which is its rotating part. The armature coil is connected to the DC supply.

The armature coil consists of the commutator and brushes. The commutator lets each coil to be powered and connects them with the external power supply through the brushes.

DC motors are used in jobs where constant speed applications are needed, including in drilling machines, centrifugal pumps and conveyors.
